Objectives:
- Define telescope: a device that collects light and makes distant objects appear closer and larger
- Define comet: a chunk of ice, rock, and dust that moves around the Sun
- Define orbit: the path an object takes as it travels around another object
- Define meteor: a piece of rock, ice or metal that burns up in Earth's atmosphere, causing a streak of light to appear in the sky
Materials:
- Equity sticks
- Book: Our Solar System, by Seymour Simon
- Post-its to flag important sections of the book
- Journals
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Calming music
- Notecards
Events of Instruction:
- Ask the class what we learned yesterday, and ask what a solar system is, what galaxy we are a part of, etc.
- Read sections of Our Solar System, by Seymour Simon. Teacher will read before and flag pages with information relating to the objectives. Review the important concepts, the objectives, each time they are mentioned in the book.
- Ask students to get out their journals. Instruct students to draw an outline of their hand on a new page in their journal. Tell students to draw their hand bigger and their fingers longer than normal. Instruct students to write the four definitions for today, the terms reviewed in the book (objectives) in each of their fingers.
- The teacher will complete this activity with students on the board by drawing a large outline of a hand with the definitions as well.
- Above each finger, instruct students to draw a picture of each definition. Provide crayons, colored pencils, or markers and ask the students to make their drawings detailed.
- Play calming, soft music in the background to calm and relax the class as they work.
- Assessment: Hand out exit tickets. Exit tickets are where each student will answer two questions, one on the front of the notecard and one on the back of the notecard. (What is the most important thing I learned today? What questions do I still have?) This will serve as the summative assessment for this lesson.
- After students complete this activity, the teacher will use equity sticks to call on students at random and ask them questions based on the objectives from today and yesterday.
